Hva er bruddgebyr – og når må du egentlig betale det?

What is a termination fee – and when do you actually have to pay it?

What is a mobile subscription termination fee?

A termination fee is a cost that may be incurred if you terminate a mobile subscription before the end of the contract period. This typically applies when you have entered into a contract with operators such as Telenor, Telia or Ice, and terminate the agreement before the end of the contract period.

What do the rules say about termination fees?

In Norway, it is legal to charge a termination fee if:

  • You have signed a mobile subscription with a fixed term.
  • The commitment period is clearly stated in the agreement.
  • You terminate the subscription before the binding period has expired.

But there are exceptions!

If the binding period is not clearly stated, or the agreement violates the Consumer Authority's guidelines, you may have the right to terminate without paying a fee.

How much can a termination fee be?

The amount varies, but common practice is that the operator requires:

  • An amount equal to the remaining costs during the commitment period, or
  • A fixed amount that is stated in the agreement.

This can quickly amount to several thousand kroner, especially if you have recently entered into the agreement.

How to avoid termination fees on mobile subscriptions?

  1. Read the terms and conditions carefully before committing.
  2. Always check if a commitment period is included.
